| 2562 | Unbalance this is the second full-length album by dave huismans aka 2562, the follow-up to his roundly acclaimed debut, aerial (tec 004cd/021lp). unbalance pushes both his creative talents, and the boundaries of dubstep, to another level entirely. this is an exceptional body of electronic music, and fully demonstrates 2562`s adept ability to move through engaging soundscapes with both pin-point precision drum programming and innovative sample regeneration. 2562 is named after the postcode in the hague, netherlands where huismans lives -- a city detached from the main epicenters of dubstep, thus bringing both cultural distance and a uniquely diverse sound to the project. unbalance sees 2562`s vision of dubstep moving forward into previously-unexplored areas. warmer than its predecessor, innovation and experimentation is still as evident as ever, as the influence of theo parrish and flying lotus meet with the deep end of bristol bass music. with productions drawing inspiration from garage, dubstep, house, techno and broken beats -- affiliations and collaborations have proliferated -- killer remixes and one-offs have cemented the dutchman firmly in the "a" list of contemporary production talent. unbalance is impeccably built, and accessibly disposed: sheer dancefloor carnage is guaranteed. with this new album, 2562 breaks new ground -- in moving away from the dub-techno associations of his earlier works, he creates a whole new world. from the outset, "intro" and "flashback" let fly some of the face cards in huismans` deck -- the ample swell of swung garage informed by a new school sensibility, all grounded by that trademark giant bass presence. "lost" reprises a familiar broken refrain in refixed mode, landing with a delightful low-end, almost junglist descent and a huge, mid-range melodic sustain -- absolutely killer stuff. with "like a dream," the album really motors -- squashed mr. fingers-style acid machinations inside wild bass and drum swing. tear up the dub instructions, the diversity and breathtaking momentum of this fine album moves fleet of foot -- like usain bolt over berlin. | A.r. & Machines | Die Grüne Reise - The Green Journey W/ Dvd remastered deluxe 2007 release. achim reichel`s a.r. & machines genius german krautrock/space-rock project die grüne reise - the green journey finds new life. originally issued by polydor in germany in 1971, reichel played all the instruments here, and produced the entire thing himself in partnership with frank dostal, who also penned the english lyrics and had previously done time with reichel in the popular west german beatgruppe, the rattles. the green journey is a masterpiece of doubly/triply-tracked, tape-machined, echo-plexed and looped space-guitar-madness, with a host of skronk, thunderous percussion, tribal whoops, and head-busting, three-dimensional, lysergic lyrics. as the artist himself proclaimed, "i was just trying something out with my guitar, when out of the blue, the akai x-3300 began to repeat endless cascades of guitar echoes. my guitar suddenly sounded like ten." initially, the green voyage was intended as "a soundtrack for an imaginary movie," and this has now been achieved by some 60 students of the lippe and höxter`s university of applied sciences, who, over the course of two terms produced a 42-minute video for the ten album tracks. there`s also a 10-minute "making of" film as well. housed in a 6-panel, tri-fold dexluxe digipack with liner notes in german and english written by jörg gülden. dolby digital stereo; 1,78:12 in 16:9 format; pal; region: 0, dvd9. | Acid Mothers Temple | Lord Of The Underground: Vishnu And The Magic Elixir `s return with a new release, their fourth for the label. the album is made up entirely of new studio recordings that have captured the band in fantastic form. the band is captured flying at full speed dishing out three slabs of turkish psych meets krautrock, served up acid mothers temple style. the opening cut, `eleking the clay` is a smoker that bears some resemblance to their well known `hit,` `la novia.` the speed guru, a.k.a. kawabata makoto, is on fire and mesmerizes us with his speed and furry on this track. his guitar playing is so quick it becomes difficult to differentiate the actual notes being played as you are overtaken by the speed and repetitious nature of the track. in this respect it also brings to mind their fantastic rendition of the terry riley`s minimalist anthem `in c.` the same notes repeating over and over until they start to coalesce and take new shape. next up is a short piece written by bass player and multi- instrumentalist atsushi tsuyama who is credited with playing monster bass, voice, acoustic guitar, alto recorder, flute, toy trumpet and kazoo. if you have ever witnessed the band live, you are aware of what a huge presence bassist atsushi tsuyama is within a live context and it is equally the case on lord of the underground. this track, entitled `sorcerer`s stone of the magi,` serves as an intermission if you will; it is a nice gentle piece of outsider folk that allows you brace yourself for the epic closing track `vishnu and the magic elixir.` the final cut takes it`s time to deliver its message and sees the band in familiar territory. here they play with some of their more playful influences, such as frank zappa and incredible string band, and blend them with their patented spaced out electronics that have graced many of their records. | Actress | Hazyville is the production guise of werkdiscs founder and controller darren j. cunningham, and this is his first full-length release. having discovered, introduced and represented of some of the electronic underground`s most respected current artists -- starkey, lukid, and disrupt to mention a few -- actress now presents hazyville as an abstract document of the convention-challenging spirit and sound of the werk label, channeled and filtered through the perception of the mind at the helm. aside from some remix excursions for labels like various production and soma, hazyville is the first actress release since 2004`s no tricks ep, apart from some clandestine recordings and remixes that have been peeled from his studio in recent times. written over the course of five years through some testing times, hazyville is a creative juxtaposition of raw and uncut sounds, born of elemental processes yet raised and refined at length with parental love and attention. working to a method of turning the machines on and letting them run, the album`s 11 tracks were all recorded in live takes, but by restricting these sessions to specific mood-windows, each tune is imprinted with emotion in the same way that cooling magma records the earth`s magnetic polarity as it solidifies into rock. inspired as much by other werk artists as by afro-futurists like terrence dixon, juan atkins, robert hood, carl craig and drexciya, hazyville is a psyched-out mono-recorded transmission of claustrophobic neon techno from the school of detroit, chicago and rave. hazyville whirrs, hums and rotates like a rust-dusted compressed machine-funk counterpart to lukid`s organic, vine-like, low-impact beats -- although it`s likely they`re both indebted to the same high-grade skunk supply.
